Firstly impressions are taken by the dentist of your upper and lower teeth, so they can then be sent to the laboratory, so that the technician can make custom made whitening trays.
To relieve after-pain take painkillers such as Nurofen. If uncomfortable symptoms persist after 24 hours rinse with hot salt mouth washes (One teaspoon of salt in water as hot as is bearable).
We are often asked for advice on which painkillers to take for dental pain. Firstly we would point out that painkillers are to be taken for temporary relief of pain. The longer a medication is taken the more unwanted side effects may become apparent.
Helpful hints after you have had your brace fitted
Parts of the brace may rub on your lips, cheeks or tongue. You may also notice increased saliva flow, and a minor temporary effect on your speech. This is normal, and soon you’ll get used to wearing your brace and your speech will go back to normal.
We sometimes prescribe antibiotics to help fight infections. Antibiotics work against bacteria, but not viruses. As a general rule oral contraceptive pills will not work whilst you are on antibiotics and for up to a week after stopping.
Many people suffer with jaw joint (TMJ) problems. Sometimes some simple advice is helpful. Don’t bite your fingernails. Never bite your lower lip. Avoid biting on your front teeth. Keep your upper and lower teeth apart when you are at rest.
