We are often asked for advice on which painkillers to take for dental pain.
Firstly we would point out that painkillers are to be taken for temporary relief of pain. The longer a medication is taken the more unwanted side effects may become apparent.
We usually recommend that patients with toothache should take painkillers that they are used to and would usually take for a headache to provent any sort of side effects and allergies.
Recommended painkillers:
Paracetamol
Paracetamol doesn’t irritate the stomach, so patients on warfarin can use it. Patients should always read the label and stick to the printed recommendations.
Nuromol
Nuromol is an over-the-counter painkiller, its a combination of paracetamol and ibuprofen and is now available in pharmacies across the UK. The power of this non-prescription painkiller has been proven in a dental pain study, which showed that one tablet of Nuromol provided pain relief from dental problems, which is substancially stronger that the painkilling relief that can be provided by a combination of 30mg codeine and 1000mg paracetamol.
